Ability West provides services and supports to over 520 individuals with intellectual disability throughout Galway City and County. We aim to provide quality supports and services to children and adults, in line with our Vision and Mission Statements and our Strategic Plan 2014 – 2018. Our mission is to provide an individual and holistic service to each person availing of our services, with each person supported and valued within an environment which promotes their overall autonomy, health and wellbeing and enables them to reach their potential.
Ability West provides services to children and adults with intellectual disability whose primary diagnosis is intellectual disability and may also include co-morbidity. The age range the services can accommodate is persons (male and female) usually from five years upwards, however, in Carraroe we provide pre-school facilities.
Ability West is funded in the main by the Health Service Executive with a Service Arrangement in place which details an agreed quantum of service provision. Ability West also receives some funding from the Department of Education and Skills.
Ability West is a company limited by guarantee and has charitable status. All monies from fundraising are solely used for capital projects such as: buildings, purchase of buses and equipment. Fundraising is not utilised for salary purposes. We greatly appreciate the ongoing generosity of our supporters and friends. Volunteers, Community Employment Scheme, TÚS and GRD participants are of tremendous assistance in helping Ability West to provide top quality services. Staff, volunteers and scheme participants are supported by ongoing training and development and we work in partnership with service users, family members and the community in order to enable people with intellectual disability to achieve their full potential and to take their rightful place in society.
