Job Shadow Day 2018 took place on Wednesday, 25th April and saw hundreds of people with disabilities ‘shadow’ workers across Ireland for one day as they go about their normal working routine. As part of this year’s event, Ability West partnered with four employers in Galway to give adults with an intellectual disability an opportunity to learn more about their career interests and the skills needed to succeed at work, while also promoting equal employment opportunities to Irish businesses.
Job Shadow Day is a national day of awareness to promote equal employment opportunities for people with disabilities. It is an initiative of the Irish Association of Supported Employment (IASE). The day is all about highlighting the valuable contribution people with disabilities can and do make at work. It also gives employers an opportunity to express their commitment to inclusion in the workplace.
Tesco, Age Action, Saol Café and the Local Employment Service, Galway participated in Job Shadow Day 2018 with Ability West. Jobseekers experienced working in a grocery and clothing retail environment, in a restaurant and in an office environment. The day was hugely positive for all involved. Employers were very excited to be a part of the initiative.
Ability West works with our partner employers to facilitate work experience placements for adults with an intellectual disability each year. We are incredibly lucky to work with very many supportive employers in Galway City. Work placements normally run for 12 weeks for 1-2 hours 1 day per week, though can be for longer.
