“SO CAN I” is an Intellectual Disability Awareness Programme
for Secondary schools students between the ages 15-18.
It is a programme that is conveying a simple message: A Message of Equality.
This message will hopefully reach every secondary school in Galway City and
County in the coming academic year.
This Programme will really emphasise to young people that they can make a
difference in the lives of others.
“SO CAN I” will also make people appreciate that those with an
Intellectual Disability have the same rights, wishes, dreams and individual
talents as us all.
The aim of the Programme is to
• Foster an understanding of Intellectual disability.
• To encourage more focus on the individual rather than the disability.
• To promote greater awareness of challenges faced by those with intellectual
disabilities
• To inform young people on the importance of active involvement within
their communities, both now and in the future.
The programme will be delivered by informative presentation, group activity
and discussion and feedback from the students themselves.
Following the delivery of the “SO CAN I” programme, it is envisaged
that students will be more aware of issues within their own communities. This
presentation will encourage thought and discussion, and hopefully, will have
challenged previous perceptions and attitudes.
It will create an opportunity for individual social development among young
people and encourage social outreach in their local community.
This project has been funded by the AIB Better Ireland programme.
